Issues with the original firmware

I’ve used my E72 and it is quite stable in general, more than my previous Symbian units at the time of release.

Even so, after loading a lot of applications, I now have the following issues:

#Problem 1 (Closed) – Description:
The phone’s backlight sometimes stops working. It simply does not light up.

#Problem 1 – Conditions:
Typically happens after the phone is connected to a PC in Mass Media mode via USB
#Problem 1 – Solution
No solution. The only way to light up and see the screen is to press the Power button or change profile. After a while it will happen again. It is not possible to reboot or turn off w/the power button so the only option is to remove the battery.

[Update]: I can no longer reproduce this issue after a reset and 22.007 flashing

#Problem 2 (Open) – Description
Sygic Mobile 7 GPS software crashes after some minutes of navigation, with the error “Unexpected Error”

#Problem 2 – Conditions
E72 has mem+card encryption turned on. I’ve noticed that the crash always happens when the Nokia self-locks itself. Seems Sygic tries to write and the encryption becomes a problem.
#Problem 2 – Solution
The maximum auto-lock duration configurable for the E72 is 20 minutes, so you cannot use Sygic for longer than that without a crash. The only solution at the time appears to be deactivating strong encryption (for internal memory and card)

Problem 3 (Closed) – Description
Sometimes the breathing light keeps blinking active even after an incoming SMS was read (should return to normal)

Problem 3 – Conditions
I’ve been unable to determine when this happens, but it does always happen when Problem #1 is ocurring
Problem 3 – Solution
No solution except reboot.

[Update]: I can no longer reproduce this issue after a reset and 22.007 flashing

Problem 4 (Closed) – Description
Phone turns off even when the battery was charged.

Problem 3 – Conditions
Sometimes the battery is charged but I later find out that the phone is off (as if battery was fully drained). I am not sure if this happens because something is left on(LED, etc) constantly draining the battery or if the software is incorrectly determining that the battery is empty.
Problem 3 – Solution
No solution except plugging it to the charger for a bit, it will then work and show an almost empty battery indicator.

[Update]: I can no longer reproduce this issue after a reset and 22.007 flashing

    1) The Call Log registers Shows Mobile Icon in front of all the numbers whether the Call is Made to Mobile or Home Phone or Office or Fax — it should show correct Icon

    2) When you dial number – Loudspeaker option is oN Left Hand Side, When you receive Calls – Loudspeaker Option is on Right hand side — Very Annoying — both should be on 1 side Only

    3) FM Radio — Although Manual Says route to Speaker — but there is no Such option – so you can listen only thru Headset

    4) GPS – In Manual option is there to check How many Satellites are in Sight to get Signal — No Such Option in Phone

5)GPS – Signal not working even after trying 15 minutes in Open Ground – without any High rise Building..

I think they have issued the firmware hastily without testing etc. gives Bad name to Nokia

I noticed a bug in my phone.. Could anyone try this one out?

when composing an sms quickly, the (r,t,y,u,f,g,h,j,v,b,n,m) keys or the keys with numbers on it respond slower than the other set of keys. so when typing fast, these keys doesn’t seem to register..

To do this – try pressing q and p alternatively as quick as possible.. you would roughly get qpqpqpqpqpqpqpqpqpq

but if you press q and y alternatively as quick as possible.. you would get
    qqqqyqqyqyqyqqqqqqq

    or more q’s than y’s

    Hi,

After i disabeld the memory encryption, the “Unexpected Error” from Sygic navigation is still coming. Sometimes after 1 minute.

Is there any solution to solve this problem?

    Thanks.

Did you disable the card encryption too?
On mine it gives the error after X minutes, where X is the timer I have set for the card encryption lock. So it can range from 1-20 as Nokia does not allow bigger timers.

Maybe Sygic can code around this issue.

Thanks shfl, for your reaction and help. I have checked the card encryption, and it is disabled too. Maybe i am doing something wrong, i checked it under “menu”, “office”, “filemanager” then under “options” i can’t find any encryptions.

I assumed that the encryption is not active… Unfortunately i can’t find any timers. Do you know where these are?

    Thanks.

You define encryption on/off at Control Panel > Phone > Encryption.
The lock timer you can see at Settings > General > Security > Phone and SIM Card

Very strange…. the encryption from both memory, phone memory and card memory are off. And the navigation doésn’t work correct, sometimes it crashes after one minute. I hope Sygic makes an update for this problem.

    Thanks for your help.

In that case I suspect it as nothing to do with the encryption issue that I get on mine (crash when it auto-locks). The E72 is new and so is its firmware. Perhaps Sygic isn’t fully compatible yet. Check out later versions. I’m going to test Garmin XT too to see how it behaves.

Glitches…try to open your video mode and there is a ligth on/off and it doesn’t work at all… plus the nightmode doesn’t utilize light… then the email problems.. how i wish that nokia would fix these glitches..overall i’d still like to use this phone but if it’s not solve the i probably should find another phone…probably another brand samsung or sony…

I’ve been trying for weeks to connect an E72 to my home wifi network (on an Apple Airport Extreme). It is incredibly unstable: the phone sometimes sees the network, rarely manages to connect and then loses the connection within minutes.
I’ve tried to play with the Airport security settings, mode, radio canal – absolutely no change. The recent E72 firmware update hasn’t changed anything either.
    Any idea?

    • January 24, 2010 at 7:16 am

To be honest I’ve had no problems with wifi so far. I can connect to both my home router (asus 500g premium v2) and at work with no problems at all. Didn’t to anything specialy other than the obvious (psk keys, etc). My experience in the apple world is zero so I cannot guess if it is something with the E72 or the Airport.

So far I’ve had minor problems with the 007 firmware, as not being able to assing a speed dial to a particular contact (dont know why), not being able to add a contact to an email and other minor stuff. Memory leaks appear to remain common unfortunately.

The behaviour of the space-flashglight key is now fixed with this first firmware fix. Keep working Nokia.. get the E72 out of Alpha-grade firmware…

I am unable to receive calls. A blue phone symbol appreas on left top corner on screen just on top of operators name. This happens quite often if my phone keep searching for the Wireless network for long.

hey, check out the “Adv Comm Manager” under Apps. It seems it comes by default and not sure how it gets activated. I had the exact same problem of the small blue phone symbol coming and not being able to receive calls. After removing the app – the problem has got solved!

    9. Email configuration very tough only one email can configure 2nd can’t
    10. Email stopped responding after a week time
    11. Space bar missing, sometimes space bar is not responding in any application
    12. Camera performance very bad, I can’t record more than 5 videos after it hangs,
    13. First picture processing time 4 sec, 2nd picture 6 sec, 3rd – 4 sec, 4th – 7 sec, 5th – 20, 6th – 15, 7th – Phone hang
    14. Focusing not accurate sometime it works and sometime not
    15. Web browsing very slow
    16. “U” key is not working under opera 10
    17. PDF reader is very slow, i tried with a 7.4 MB file phone hanged and switched off automatically
    18. Problem with Bluetooth Headset. I tried with BH215 Daily 2~5 times missing
    19. Sometimes no audio from both phone and Headset need restarting
    20. Sometimes audio is vibrating, and need a hard restart

    31. I tried to open multiple applications but maximum 5 applications i can open. Try to open GPS or some other big application the phone will stop responding.
    32. no professional themes
    33. By default menu orientation 4 x 3, if they reduced the size of the menu items then the selection may be easy with optinavi. 4×3 menu scheme is ok for older key pattern. With Trackball/Optinavi just look at blackberry 9700
    34. E72 is not designed for optinavi operation in all means
    35. inbuilt voip client is not good enough need some third party software (Nimbus /Fring)
    36 …. etc

I am having a problem with my Nokia E72 wherein it drops any call which is from a number which is not in my address book. There is also a small blue phone symbol on top left corner.

Is this a glitch in the phone? How can I solve this problem?

    Thanks,
    Ronak

Are you sure you did not install any call management app? Tools like EasyReject, MCaller or Interactive Voice Call Manager allow you to filter calls/sms according to rules (for instance, anyone out of your phonebook gets blocked) and in most cases they add a small icon on the top (the two I mention add it on the right side tho).

hey, you were spot-on with your suggestion. I had spent 4 hrs trying to figure out all sorts of phone/call settings. But had forgotten to check the apps installed. It seems there was an app called “Adv Comm Manager” which had some weird default setting- to block all calls and SMS which are not from the address book. Its a seriously badly designed app. Have removed it now. Thanks a ton for your suggestion as I was about to re-format my e72. Just saved me all that hassle.

        Glad I could be useful.

I tried several of those applications but many had limitations. For instance, some would allow you to reject unknown calls but not to mute the ringer and “let it ring” (so it would go to voicemail if important).

I’m using Interactive Voice Call Manager from Mobisophy Technologies. It appears to work ok and is very configurable with all sorts of rules.

Am very confused whether to buy this phone or not after reading all the comments.. Hope someone will give me honest opinion.. Am a student and i dont want to waste my savings on a phone with so many bugs.

    thanks

    • February 5, 2010 at 10:44 am

Well you should keep in mind that this blog is about the bugs and problems so it might scare you a bit.

I’ve had my E72 since the day it was launched and overall I am pleased despite all the bugs reported (some I can reproduce, some I cannot).

Most Symbian Nokias always have pretty buggy firmware at release time (perhaps they rush things out due to market pressure). My old 6630 sometimes wouldn’t even ring or vibrate when I got a normal call – took 4 or 5 firmware upgrades to get it stable.

The E72 is already “stable enough” with firmware 22.007 so perhaps it will become a great phone after a couple more versions.

If you like it, go for it.

The only thing that bothers me with this phone and cannot be upgraded (it is not a bug) is that it would be better to have more RAM. After boot I get only around 30MB free RAM – so you can’t run many “fat” applications at the same time.

      • February 5, 2010 at 11:37 am

Thanks a lot man.. maybe i’ll wait for couple of months to buy this phone.. though the temptation to buy is enormous 🙂

        Thanks again

    2) Is true and an example of bad usability design. GPS is indeed not very sensitive.
However you are wrong on the loudspeaker thing.. you can route radio to the loudspeaker but the headset has to be plugged at all times to serve as an aerial.

when connected by bluetooth to my car kit, the software pauses the music when it receives a text message, likewise for when you send a text and again when the text delivers.

It will also pause when you touch any key on your keypad, incuding trying to open and play a game.
